The Mariners Remain Lucky

Last month, I highlighted how the Mariners were overachieving (link). Basically, the team has had lucky sequencing. They have clustered their hits together, and their pitchers have spaced out the hits they've given up. Their run differential is very, very good as a result - +70 runs, #2 in the major leagues. If the team had had only "average luck," their run differential would be considerably worse, and they would have fewer wins and more losses. Pretty simple.

Today, this FiveThirtyEight article reiterates this point. It's a good read if you have five minutes. 

The Mariners are the luckiest team in baseball, just considering the pure sequencing of events. But as long as they are favored to make the playoffs, they should remain extremely aggressive, and try to improve the team.
